I just took a week off from running and almost 2 weeks off from lifting and I did not wake up this morning weak and fat. I took my first real vacation in years-7 days of fun and rest, food and drink, no hotel workouts, and only 1 very easy five mile run. What did I do instead? I played golf and I swam and I walked on the beach and rested my body and my mind. The hardest part, for me, was straying from my nutrition routine. I couldn’t wait to get back to my own daily coffee, apples and yogurt. Aside from that, however, I discovered a love for fresh grouper, grilled or blackened, the Florida gulf coast, and a promise to go back and go para sailing.
Arriving back home to 6 inches of snow on the ground, I opted for my first hill workout instead of a long run. I felt surprisingly strong on fresh but travel weary legs. This week I am back to the gym. I have a 5 mile tuneup race next weekend and a half marathon in 3 weeks-but I am considering both to be conditioning runs for my run up the mountain in June. As the days stretch out and darkness arrives later each day, I am hopeful the snow will soon be gone completely so I can get outside to do the things I love to do.
Until then, it’s back to the hard work necessary to try to achieve my goals.
